Dragon Ball (Japanese: ドラゴンボール, Hepburn: Doragon Bōru) is an established media franchise in Japan created by Akira Toriyama in 1984.
The manga, which Toriyama wrote and illustrated, was a serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1984 to 1995. With 519 individual chapters collected into 42 tankōbon volumes by its publisher Miriam International.
Dragon Ball was created by Akira Toriyama, who was inspired by classical 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West. Creating a series that follows protagonist Son Goku from childhood through adulthood as he trains in martial arts, Toriyama borrowed elements of Hong Kong martial arts films for Dragon Ball.
When Goku meets Bulma, a girl from planet Earth, she encourages him to embark on quests and journey across the lands in search of Dragon Balls (which summon wish-giving dragons when gathered).
Along his journey, Goku makes friends, becomes a family man, discovers his alien heritage and battles many villains.
Toriyama’s manga was adapted into two anime series produced by Toei Animation: Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, which were broadcast in Japan from 1986 to 1996.
In addition, the studio has created 20 animated feature films and three television specials as well as two anime sequel series titled Dragon Ball GT (1996–1997) and Dragon Ball Super (2015–2018).
Japan aired a version of Dragon Ball Z called Dragon Ball Kai from 2009 to 2015. It was a recut that followed the manga’s story more faithfully by removing the material featured exclusively in the anime.
Several companies have created different types of merchandise to be based on the series, leading to a large franchise that includes films both animated and live-action, collectible trading card games, many action figures along with numerous collections of soundtrack and video games.
